Monohans Sandhills State Park

Our first stop on our Sunny Southwest trip was in Texas – Monahans Sandhills State Park. We had read about this place, but there wasn’t much to make it a destination on its’ own. For this trip it worked out great because it was on our way to New Mexico. The campground really is just a lot of sand dunes next to asphalt. You feel like you are at beach and the ocean should be just over the next dune. There were a lot of families enjoying the picnic areas on Sunday, but you can see from this picture that there weren’t a lot of overnight campers.

We had great weather. It got really windy the day we left. Monahans was a great campground to have our bikes since there weren’t any hiking trails. We road for around for about an hour on the park roads. We enjoyed the lovely (and unexpectedly large) Visitor Center and nature trail (where I couldn’t resist taking one more flower picture).
