Living Desert Museum – Carlsbad

On our way out of Carlsbad heading to the Bottomless Lakes State Park outside of Roswell, we had some time to kill so we stopped at the Living Desert Zoo and Garden State Park. It was a nice hour checking out the wildlife – though there wasn’t a huge amount to see.

There were big crowds the day before and in the morning because of Earth Day celebrations, so the guide told us the bear was tired and he never did come out of his cave while we were there. I enjoyed the Bolson Tortoise and the Prairie Dogs. This is supposedly the only Zoo that is breeding the endangered Bolson Tortoise – I think I read somthing about Ted Turner funding the project. The tortoise seem to have a lot of attitude!

  1. The boy’s loved the pictures of the animals. We just recently watched “Alvin & the Chipmunks” and thought the Prairie Dogs were Chipmunks.
